About our Guides

Jaya hates creamy peanut butter.

Jaya Marr is originally from New Zealand.  She has guided in Patagonia, Alaska, and on the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers in New Zealand.  Her climbing career spans the highest peaks of New Zealand, Alaska, and Patagonia.  In 2005, she was part of an all women’s team on Denali (Mt. McKinley), the highest peak in North America.  She is a Leave No Trace Master Educator, a Wilderness First Responder and is an Avalanche Safety I practicioner.  She has also served as a member of the West Coast Alpine Rescue team and Fox Glacier Ambulance brigade.

Ben has a stuffed bunny rabbit that goes everywhere with him.

Hailing from Chickaloon, Alaska, Ben Gorelick has split his guiding career between Alaska and Patagonia, while indulging his passion for climbing all over the world, including Alaska, Mongolia, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Thailand, and New Zealand.  He is a certified Wilderness First Responder Instructor, a Leave No Trace Trainer, and an Avalanche Safety I practicioner. He also has a B.S. in Environmental Science from Alaska Pacific University.

Graham and Carmen Gloria are the voices for 'The Simpsons' here in Chile.

Graham Hornsey and Carmen Gloria Monjes are a husband and wife team who are the ground anchor of The Patagonia Mountaineering School, taking care of all the operational and logistical requirements. They have lived and worked in Patagonia together with their 12 year old daughter Karen for the last 16 years. During this time Graham and Carmen Gloria have amassed an impressive total of 30 years combined experience administering wilderness and adventure expeditions together with extensive experience working with government departments, authorities and non-governmental organisations.

Megan speaks with a funny accent.

Megan Irving, originally from the UK, has been walking in the mountains for as long as she can remember. But she never really expected to make a career out of guiding. Way back when, she was a member of The Patagonia Mountaineering School's second ever expedition. She was later invited to come back via our internship program. Through hard work and dedication, she has become a sterling guide. She has climbed in the Himalayas, Alaska, the US and Canadian Rockies, as well as the mountains of Europe. When she's not climbing, Megan enjoys cycle touring (she has cycled across Europe on a tandem bicycle) and cooking.

Joos Ilsbroux is bald

Joos Ilsbroux, originally from Belgium, came to Chile in 1995 and forgot to go home. After traveling all over South America, he became the first westerner to train with the prestigioius Venezuelan Alpine Rescue Team. He came back to Chile in 2002 and has been guiding ever since. He is a Wilderness First Responder, a Leave No Trace Trainer, and is an Avalanche Safety I practicioner. In the offseason, Joos enjoys climbing and trekking in the many mountains near Coyhaique.
